What is
Creative Gr
o
oming?
Creative grooming is adding creativity to the groom with color, rhinestones, glitter, etc.

Is it safe/what products are used?
Yes it is safe.  The products that we use are approved by the National Association of Professional Creative Groomers (NAPCG).  There are two types of ways to color the coat, with temporary or semi-permanant dyes.  The temporary dyes can only be applied to small areas of the coat.  There are two types of adhesives used to adhere rhinestones and other finishing touches to the coat.  One is temporary and can be readily washed off and the other may need the use of an oil, such as vegetable oil, to remove from the coat, but it will last much longer.  We can also use pet hairsprays and other adhesives that were specifically designed for use on pets.

Will my pet have a reaction to the dye?
Most likely they won't.  However, just as your pet can have a reaction to any product, even an all natural and hypoallergenic product, it is possible.  If your pet has had reactions to shampoos or any other product, we suggest that you do not try creative grooming.  Before applying semi-permanant dye, we put a small amount on a discrete area of your pet to see if your pet will have a reaction to the dye.

Will the dye color the skin as well as the coat?
Most dyes will not color the skin.  However, some products and colors, such as black are more likely to color the skin.  If it does, it will come off the skin after a few baths.

How long will it last?
The temporary color will rub off and it will usually wash out within a one to two baths.  The semi-permanant dyes will last a bit longer, depending on the coat type and type of dye used.  Some can last six months and others will wash out in 2 to 5 baths.  If you would like something adhered to the coat, the temporary adhesive may last a couple of days to a couple of weeks if the pet leaves it alone and the the semi-permanent adhesive may last up to a few months, depending on coat type, placement on the body, activity level of the pet, etc.

How long does it take?
Temporary dyes, earrings, and glitter may only take a few minutes.  Semi-permanent dyes take a minimum of 20 minutes in addition to the regular grooming time.

How far in advance do I need to schedule a creative groom?
For temporary dyes, there is no advanced notice needed.  If you would like something specific or a semi-permanent dye we may need a couple weeks notice.  For semi-permanent dye, we will need to schedule extra time for the appointment.  Also, because the semi-permanant dyes are more expensive and used less often, we may need to special order the specific color or product that you would like. However, we do have some semi-permanent colors in stock to choose from.

How much does it cost?
The cost varies, depending on the products used and the time needed to complete the groom.  Temporary dye application on a small area is included in the mini groom or full service grooming.  Semi-permanant dyes start at $25.  Glitter or rhinestone art is included in the mini groom or full service grooming.

After shaving down my pet, Can you still color the coat?
Yes.  In fact it can be easier to do a more intricate design when the coat is shorter.

I have a dark colored pet, can I color the coat?
Temporary color can be applied on a dark colored pet.  However, semi-permanant won't show up on a dark colored pet.  Bleaching the coat is not approved by the NAPCG and is not recommended for the safety and comfort of your pet.  Dark colored pets can have rhinestones or glitter applied to the coat.

What designs are offered?
We can do most simple designs.  Extremely complicated creative grooms can take a very long time and are not feasible to do in the salon.  Temporary dyes can only be applied to small areas of the coat such as ears or a small stencil.  Please refer to our photos page for some ideas.

Can you color cats or other pets?
Yes.  The products that we use are safe for all pets.

Can I color my pet if I don't get him/her groomed?
Because bathing is required for a semi-permanent dye application, the mini groom or full groom is required.  However, temporary dyes, rhinestone application, or glitter can be applied to a pet that does not receive a mini groom or a full groom.

What occasions would I want creative grooming for?
All occasions:  Weddings, Holidays, Super Bowl parties, or just some temporary earrings for your pet to wear when she sees her friends at the dog park.

Why do some areas outlaw coloring animals?
Some areas in states such as Florida and South Carolina have laws banning the coloring of animals.  The reason some laws are in place that prevent animals from being colored originated from the fact that pet stores used to color baby chicks and bunnies to sell for Easter.  The problem was that they were dunking the animals in toxic chemicals that should not have been used on them.  Not only that, but this resulted in many chicks that were soon unwanted by their owners.  The laws were put in place for a good reason but they were not specific enough.  Consequently, the laws banned coloring of all animals.  Currently, there are many groomers trying to make the laws more specific.
